Today, I had four whole hours to myself, during the day, to write. This is just about a miracle in my hectic world. I took my laptop, forgot my blackberry and IPod and headed to a local coffee shop in the middle of a bay-side park. I read all the time how writers can’t write at their desk because there are too many distractions. So, once again, I wanted to give this a try. Get away from my usual space and write.
I went to the top floor of the coffee shop and sat down at a table with two chairs. I turned on my laptop and started to write. I wrote 6 pages of chapter 5 in an hour. While there were a lot of distractions for me, this will be my most solid ‘in place’ chapter. I focused on describing the place and the people and went light on dialog. I usually go light on description and heavy on dialog. Getting away from my usually writing space definitely made a difference. However, it was a bit weird and weird is uncomfortable so I only stayed one hour in the coffee shop. I could list the complaints but I’ll just say the closed-space flatulence was the last straw. I moved into my car for an hour, until it got too warm. Then I headed home. Home calls to me like a magic spell. I’ve tried writing away from home, my husband just smiles at each new attempt. But I made it a whole two hours today.
My writing space at home is not the best space. It’s small and usually very messy. But its mine and I know where everything is. I made a goal to make my writing space better before the end of the year. Perhaps I should move my desk back into the closet.

I am generally against closed-space flatulence. Congratulations on progress nonetheless!
