I have several posts here about writers like or not like Janet Evanovich, the author whose style I would like to emulate. I realize saying I like an author is much like saying I like the color blue; its ambiguous and could mean anything.  So I thought I would write down exactly why I like her books so that you know what to expect from my writing, should it ever be published.

  • The stories are humorous in a way that is endearing but there are also some tense moments. Humor can have a way of making fun of someone else which is really an insult. Janet’s books don’t use that kind of humor. Janet usually points out Stephanie’s shortcomings in a humorous light but rarely anyone else’s.
  • The main character, Stephanie Plum, has a sassy but not offensive approach to her rather haphazard life.
  • Stephanie Plum is brave but not stupid. Ok, sometimes she does take it right to the edge of stupid. But she stops and calls for help.
  • She has a crazy family she cares about and can successfully integrate into her personal and professional life.
  • She lives in a colorful environment. Ok, so Jersey probably won’t be described that way most of the time. But I love the burg.
  • Sometimes guns go off accidentally, or cars explode, or people kiss. These are good things.
