Eileen Cook takes an interesting twist on the humorous lead female character in her novel “Unpredictable”. The protagonist, Sophie Kintock, is trying to get her ex-boyfriend back by posing as a psychic, giving a doomed reading to the current girlfriend. She also moves his car to a different parking spot and steals one sock out of each pair. She is a humorous character because she constantly takes things too far assuming she is going down the right path and everyone else is just over-reacting. She has a bent morale compass and a dogged determination to get her ex-boyfriend back. While the reader can spot the obviously doomed relationship and error in each attempt to make him come running back, the lead character doesn’t see the true consequenses.
This type of humor isn’t exactly what I’m going for but it was nice to see a Lucille Ball-type character on the page.
I enjoyed the descriptions of Vancouver and Vancouver Island as well as the American living in Canada explanation of the culture.
