Technology: I came to technology by accident as part of a job in college. I didn’t care for the job, but I loved the computers. I have a degree in Computer Science and have worked in both small and large software companies. I’ve held every position on the team:

  • Program Management
  • Development
  • Testing
  • Documentation
  • SDK – Software Developer’s Kit
  • Release Management

I focus on Microsoft Technologies exclusively. I love tech tools (toys) and I’m never without my smart phone (unless my kids hid it).

Writing: My writing skills grew in college. I have slips of paper with characters, story ideas, and plot points — stained and scribbled on. For a long time, my stories were something I kept to myself and dreamed of on occasion.

While at Microsoft, I had an opportunity for technical writing. This was a rewarding way for me to share my enthusiasm, through writing, with other developers about the products and APIs I worked on.

As my confidence with technical writing grew, I wanted to tell the stories about the characters I grew to care for. I started the basic steps of learning creative writing from classes, workshops, critique groups, and conferences.

Now, I’m working on my first novel. It’s a fast-paced cozy techy mystery with plenty of rain, mud, and fun set in the Northwest United States. If you read Janet Evanovich, Jennifer Crusie, Elmore Leonard, or Carl Hiaasen – you understand my kind of story.

Mom: I’m married and have two great kids and a cranky cat. The cat was here first. He’s still upset that his room has someone else’s toys in it now and his bed is out in the hall. But a few bits of kitty-treat go a long way.

I tweet from two different accounts: dfberry & bhamwriter. The first account is personal — generally I natter on about the kids. The second account is focused on writing.
