Yesterday, during Mother’s Day tea at school, my son’s teacher sat to chat with me a few minutes. If you know anything about three year olds, you know these moments between adults is rare. This also happened to be the teacher with grace. When she speaks, I tend to listen.

She mentioned, out of the blue (unrelated to me writing a book) that she wanted to start carrying her book in her purse. She said the magic word, book, so I asked what she was reading. She couldn’t remember the title but told me the story so that I could narrow it down to a Sherman Alexie book.

She also mentioned she wanted to capture those five or ten minutes while waiting in line around town running errands by reading her book. I also now carry my book in my purse. And I carry the book for the exact same reason, to recapture those few minutes waiting. It is rare that I can sit down and read for even thirty minutes.

So how and when do you read? Do you wish your reading situation would change or you like it just the way it is?

This isn’t a rhetorical question. I’m serious. How do you?

I’m lazy and don’t have much time in front of the computer. That will change some day, but not in the next year or two. I was using delicious.com for my bookmark management across sites but it doesn’t work that well on my phone so I started stuffing everything into Google reader. Once I find a site I want to keep up with so I add it to Google Reader. I have Google Reader on my phone so most of my reading is via RSS feeds on my phone.

If a site doesn’t have an RSS feed and it’s not a big name site (like cnn.com), there is very little chance I will ever return. I troll the big sites occasionally but not often.

So pretty much it’s Google Reader or a search. My husband swears I’m very odd by only reading from RSS and that the rest of the world doesn’t read like this. So how do they read? I’m not talking about finding a new site to read. I’m talking about once you find a site, how do you keep it on your regular radar.

So, how do you?

In the last year, I’ve had an opportunity to read Jeremy’s essays on Facebook. A few are posted here. Some have been gut-wrenching personal articles while others captured a thought or feeling in time. Each inspired me to do more, love more — be a better person. I was surprised when he recently announced his interest in pursuing writing more because he was already there. He found his consistent voice and his theme. What more was there? He could write a menu and I’d read it over and over. He’s that good.

Just days ago, he announced a blog he started to write about his journey from one life to another, from one place to another. I expect this blog to be amazing because I’ve had a year of amazing stories from Jeremy. But I don’t want to keep him a secret. I want you to know. Here is his blog.
