Sounds like you’ve been busy! I’m going to dig up the sequel to The Eyre Affair for you, I am so happy that you enjoyed it. I am busily imagining the sunshine is out and I am on vacation, lying on the grass in my backyard – taking a break from gardening. I think that sounds just lovely.

I’ve been writing my head off, finishing the novel, giving myself hard deadlines. Fun. About to launch the author blog associated with it, by March 15 I think. Still editing other people’s books, too, great gig.

I can’t stop thinking about this. Here is what I propose happened. Toward the end of the book editing process, someone decided more information was required but there wasn’t time to thread the material through the story as that would take an entire re-edit of the ms. I believe the chapter was dropped in for both editorial and cost issues, solving problems as quickly as possible.

Thoughts?

Thanks for commenting. Weaving the information would have been smoother. The only reason I can think of to dump instead of weave, and it is really an excuse, is that after the entire ms is written, the content is determined as a must to be presented to the degree that the reader can’t lightly skip over it. One place, loads of content, editor satisfied. But still, weaving would have been smoother. You are right.

Mind you, I’m not a mystery reader. However, based on what you’ve said, I recall a conversation with a multi-published romance author friend who said that the more popular a writer, the more likely they’ll be to be allowed to break the rules–such as info-dumping.

But, to answer your original question, with time and attention, it is possible to choose the most necessary parts of the backstory and weave them in, somehow, with description or dialogue, or, at the worse, bits of flashback, rather than a dump that might just make a reader stop reading–because that’s what we want to avoid as writers, right?!
